Tahar Ben Jelloun a ceci de particulier qu'il n'écrit pas à la manière d'un véritable romancier, habité par le souci d'inventer de grandes histoires, d'échafauder des intrigues ou de camper des caractères mémorables. Si le Réel est nettement inscrit dans son oeuvre, c'est en tant que problème et non pas reflet, en tant qu'entité protéiforme que le langage, en l'occurrence, poétique fouille, mais pour en saisir la dimension occulte: le non-dit ou l'inter-dit.
